Within a 1.5 hour drive of Grace Church of the Valley, there are over 45,000 men and women locked up in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation system. Our valley has nine facilities and we are currently making visits to three yards on two of those facilities - Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga and California State Prison in Corcoran. Our purpose is to bring in a clear presentation of God's Word during each visit. Jesus' first sermon recorded after his baptism is found in Mark 1:15. “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
At each gathering, there are several men who are mature believers and several men who are not believers. In each yard, we either have a chance to preach or lead a Bible study with 15-30 men. Our trips are as much about visiting and encouraging our brothers in Christ as they are about our time in the Word. These men are in a setting where it means a great deal to them to have fellow believers visit them and worship together through the study of God's Word.
We visit Pleasant Valley SP in Coalinga each Friday evening and each Sunday afternoon. We visit Corcoran SP each Thursday evening and each Sunday afternoon.
There are many opportunities to be involved. There is a need for volunteers to teach and for volunteers to go with us to greet the men, listen to their concerns/questions and pray with them. We would also appreciate your support through prayer for this ministry.
- Pray that the gospel will take root in the lives of those who hear.
- Pray that the Holy Spirit will transform lives through salvation and bring glory to God.Pray for wisdom in deciding what study materials we should choose for the upcoming studies. We have new men being moved on to these yards all the time and we want to choose wisely.
- Pray for wisdom in dealing with the false doctrines that are spread through each of the yards while we are not there, and for wisdom in dealing with errors and difficult questions that we sometimes face when we are there.
